Part I: That was Walnut Grey Design

I had an idea that I wanted to blog about design, but no actual concept of what this meant in reality. And so with a mix of arrogance and aplomb, I set about writing my first blog piece on 3 August 2011 for Walnut Grey Design. I had a wealth of practical experience in other areas of life, career and education that would underpin my quest, but little knowledge or experience of design per se. Consequently my learning curve was steep.

Now, some five years later, my understanding of and expertise in the discipline of design has increased exponentially. In my blogging, writing and freelance work, in design tours, design shows and travel opportunities, in meeting designers, media pundits and studios, in conversations, presentations and design events, I feel I have gained from and contributed to the design field immensely. I have come to appreciate the design industry as something quite extraordinary: a vast enterprise that has the power to influence and improve quality of life, wellbeing and happiness.

To write about design, to discuss design, to read about design, these activities are hugely pleasurable. With a view to the future, they are where I will continue to invest my energies. Walnut Grey Design has served me well and I do, with the utmost sincerity, appreciate every single ounce of support that I have received. But the time is right for me to close my blog/zine and concentrate my efforts wholly on my various freelance design and writing gigs, opportunities and projects.

I’ll have an info-style website about myself soon and will “trade” under my own name as opposed to Walnut Grey Design.

Thank you for your support, strength, sustenance and validation. That was Part I and now for Part II. I hope to see you along the way.
